In 2012 and 2013, I was offered a unique opportunity to lead development of three new insurance companies in New Jersey, New York and Oregon. The opportunity was intriguing because all aspects of each insurance company needed to be built from scratch in a short period of time!
In order to achieve this goal, we knew we had to build products that were configurable for any health insurance company. Specifically, we needed to build (1) a full health insurance website and member portal, (2) a data warehouse with business intelligence, and (3) a Salesforce solution for both sales and customer service.
During the last four months of 2012, we proved we could build everything HIPAA compliant and secure in the cloud – this meant we didn’t have any capital expenses and we could scale rapidly. We also decided to primarily leverage open source technologies – this meant we had minimal software license charges and could keep our costs low.
In late 2012 and early 2013, we ramped up our product and development team, and on October 1st, all three health insurance companies went live. Within the first six months, the platform supported over 150,000 new members!
During that same six month period, we transitioned some IT work to our customers…and also came up with the idea for Zipari. Zipari would be focused on building products that make health insurance easier for consumers to understand, buy and use.
We believe that focusing on CRM, Content Management and Online Shopping products will have the most positive impact on health insurance, and as a result those are our initial products. We were lucky enough to retain the best talent, receive funding from Vertical Venture Partners, and then on August 1, 2014, launch Zipari!
I can’t say enough about the perfect trifecta of customers, team members and investors. I’m lucky to be surrounded on all sides by people with such strong integrity, knowledge and trustworthiness, and I’m truly looking forward to building the Zipari culture based on these character traits!
Health insurance is a core need, and everybody should be able to understand what they are purchasing and how to use their health insurance products effectively.
